E-waste matters debated
Tuesday 28 November, 2006
Officials from the countries of the United Nations have met in the Kenyan city of Nairobi to debate the issue of e-waste, concerning the disposal of computers and peripherals, among other items.
A system where poorer nations receive unwanted or unneeded electrical computer goods and technology from wealthier nations is currently in place, although a sizeable amount of the sent goods are apparently unfit for repair and have to be disposed of anyway.
"We want developing countries to receive usable items. Of course, who pays for this is a big issue," said Sachiko Kuwabara Yamamoto, head of the Basel Convention which monitors hazardous waste, according to Reuters.
The disposal of computers and peripherals in an environmentally-friendly, or green, manner has become an even more important issue for the public recently, especially with the greater emphasis on tackling climate change.
Another initiative to reduce the impact of printing on the environment was recently announced by Xerox.
The company awarded in excess of £530,000 to the Nature Conservancy in part to ensure sustainability of paper making.
