ISO printer cartridge standards welcomed
Wednesday 14 February, 2007
The new printer cartridge standards launched by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), which aim to provide a uniform rating system for the likes of
HP printer cartridges and
Epson printer cartridges, have been welcomed by the industry.
Announced at the end of last month, the new standards will allow consumers to compare the yield and quality of
Canon printer cartridges,
Lexmark printer cartridges and many others using a standardised system that was previously very subjective.
"They [the companies] do it themselves and say 'we based it on 15 per cent coverage', but one vendor's definition could be a page that's all red or all text and another can use photographic content," said Bob Palmer, director of printer research at InfoTrends, according to CNET News.com.
"So the way they did it before was providing their own spec," Mr Palmer, a man whose expertise covers both the consumer and office imaging market at the research and consulting firm, added.
The new guidelines should allow those considering buying a new
Canon printer cartridge or
Epson printer cartridge to see exactly what they are buying, with those looking for new
Lexmark printer cartridges and
HP printer cartridges benefiting too.
