New HP printer cartridge packaging to help the environment
Thursday 15 February, 2007
Hewlett Packard has announced its intentions to contribute towards the reduction of greenhouse gases through modifying the packaging for
HP printer cartridges.
The smaller and lighter packages will cut carbon emissions as the truck and freighter transportation traffic required to deliver them will be minimised. Furthermore, the packaging will contain more recyclable and recycled content.
The company estimate that this initiative will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated million pounds in 2007, the equivalent of 3,600 cars being taken off the roads.
Environmental observers have welcomed the move. Dr Greg Norris, the environmental life cycle assessment instructor at Harvard University, said: "The changes all go in the right direction environmentally and all in ways that make economic sense to HP and its customers."
HP estimates that its redesigned
HP printer cartridge packaging will eliminate the use of nearly 15 million pounds of materials over 2007, including three million pounds of corrugated cardboard and more than six million pounds of PVC.
The senior vice president of the company's supplies, imaging and printing group, Pradeep Jotwani, concluded: "Developing environmentally responsible packaging is not only valued by HP, our customers and our partners, it's also good business."
