Sed televisions 'placed on hold'
Thursday 31 May, 2007
In news which may be of interest to users of
Canon laser toner cartridges and
Canon printer cartridges, both Canon and Toshiba have announced the indefinite delay of the forthcoming range of surface-conduction electron-emitter (Sed) televisions.
Although Canon has been able to obtain a licence for the technology from Texas-based company Nano-Proprietary, the company has since countered that the arrangement did not include the participation of Toshiba.
The technology licensed from Nano-Proprietary was for field-emission displays.
"The worry with Sed technology now is whether it will be superseded by other screen tech before it even makes it to market," said Matthew on Geek.com.
"Canon and Toshiba have spent too long on the tech not to release it, but the patent dispute may be its undoing if no agreement can be reached," he added.
Sed technology-based televisions, first discussed in the 1980s, are believed to be both better and require half the power of existing LCD or plasma televisions, which may interest users of
Epson photo printers and
Lexmark laser printers.
