Stressed workers don't recycle
Monday 09 October, 2006
Office workers are blaming stress for their inability to recycle printer ink cartridges and printer paper, among other things.
A survey of more than 1,800 UK office workers by Envirowise found that while many recycle diligently at home, at work they lapse into less environmentally-friendly habits.
"This is a symptom of our pressurised workplaces where there is often too little time or encouragement for people to take action on waste," said Professor Toby Wall, director of the Institute of Work Psychology.
"Employers should consider quickly establishing some simple steps to help employees take more ownership of this issue – perhaps by appointing a 'champion' to lead waste-busting initiatives, encouraging greater teamwork or investing in training."
More than half (55 per cent) of workers that responded to the survey suggested that greater access to things such as recycling bins would encourage their green side, whereas 31 per cent said that clearer company policies would push them to recycle.
Envirowise has launched a Jekyll and Hyde section on its website where users can see what category they fall into when it comes to recycling and how to improve their attitude.
