Artic Monkeys do the double
Friday 16 February, 2007
Mercury Prize-winning British indie band Arctic Monkeys bagged a duo of gongs for their groaning awards shelf last night when they left the Brit Awards the proud recipients of prizes for best British group and best British album.
The award for their triple platinum-selling album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was snatched from under the noses of competitors Kasabian, Razorlight, Muse and Snow Patrol.
The album is now the first release in history to win the Mercury music prize and the Brits' best album prize in the same year.
But the boys weren't there in person to celebrate – away filming for their new single, Brainstorm, the Monkeys appeared via video link-up to make a quirky acceptance speech during which they kitted themselves out in a range of surreal costumes.
First appearing as the four leads from the Wizard of Oz, the group later morphed into hyper-camp 70s group the Village People.
"Our debut had a lot of recognition, but there's no doubt that this is a very special award and much appreciated by us all," Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner, clad in a sailor-suit, told a rapt audience.
