China's monkey Big Brother
Friday 09 February, 2007
China has taken a slightly different slant on the Big Brother phenomenon, challenging a number of Chinese residents to find their inner primate.
Offering a prize of 11,888 yuan (£788) for the winner, contestants are required to share a monkey enclosure with its more regular monkey inhabitants. For up to four days, the contestants will experience what it is like to live like a monkey.
"It is the first such activity in China, and any Chinese from 18 to 60 years old, in good psychological condition with wild animal protection and survival knowledge may participate," China Daily reported, according to Reuters.
Six contestants will be camping out in tents within the monkey enclosure in the Chinese province of Shaanxi, with the winner also landing the reputable title of honorary animal lover, the newspaper said.
While the prize money is something short of the fifteen minutes of fame and £100,000 on offer in the UK version of Big Brother and you have to spend more than half a week living in a cage with primates, at least there's no chance you'll run into Jade Goody.
