DeVito's monkey trouble
Friday 19 January, 2007
Hollywood favourite Danny DeVito has told the world about a near monkey mishap that could have removed the smile from the pint-sized funnyman's face.
The incident happened back in 1992 on the set of the second Batman movie, Batman Returns, where DeVito played the part of the Penguin. It all comes down to DeVito ignoring the old adage - don't work with children or animals.
"There's a scene where a monkey gives me a note from Batman. We rehearsed it several times and the trainer told me to just walk up to him and take it," DeVito said, according to the World Entertainment News Network.
"Of course, I looked quite scary in this Penguin suit and when we shot the scene I had black ooze coming out of my mouth. I was grunting at this monkey, I went to take the note, and suddenly it leapt toward me and grabbed hold of my nuts."
Despite the grip of the monkey being "magnetic", the man who once acted alongside Hollywood hardman turned politician Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins managed to get free. However the monkey had "taken a huge chunk right out of the suit where my nuts were", DeVito said.
He's not the only one to have had a few monkey problems when working with primates on a film set. Ben Stiller recently recalled the issues he had when involved in a slap fight with a monkey when filming A Night at the Museum.
