Escapee monkey captured by police
Wednesday 16 May, 2007
Residents from Picton in Ontario, Canada, are now rid of a free-roaming monkey after its capture by police officials.
Known to have been missing since Sunday morning, the Japanese macaque was sedated by police officers after being spotted by a local resident; the monkey was caught less than a kilometre from its home at Bergeron's Exotic Animal Sanctuary.
However, the sanctuary has been the focus of controversy in recent months, it has emerged.
"This is proof that Ontario's lax zoo regulations are not working," said Melissa Tkachyk, programme officer for World Society for the Protection of Animals Canada, in a letter to Ontario's Members of the Provincial Parliament.
"Roadside zoos present a very real threat to the health and safety of Ontarians," she added.
Indeed, there have been accusations that the Exotic Animal Sanctuary is in fact unsafe.
