Manic monkeys terrorise New Delhi
Friday 08 December, 2006
Manic monkeys are running riot in India, forcing a top court to blast officials in the capital New Delhi for failing to stop the cheeky tearaways.
Hundreds of Rhesus macaque monkeys have reportedly headed for government buildings, temples and neighbourhoods in the capital as space for them in forests dwindles.
A real monkey problem is developing, with humans having food snatched and the monkeys even taking a chomp on a human from time to time.
The high court in the city is less than happy with the work the authorities are doing to combat the problem, suggesting that this should be one of the easier issues they have to deal with.
"If you can't control the monkeys, what can you do?'' the New Delhi High Court asked authority representatives, according to the Associated Press.
In the past, monkeys have been removed from the city and relocated and bigger monkeys have been hired under the charge of monkey catchers to scare the smaller Rhesus macaque monkey population back to the forests.
In August, a langur monkey was brought in to act as a macaque monkey bouncer on the Delhi metro.
