Monkey gets police station break
Thursday 19 October, 2006
A monkey has been handed over to forest officials in India this week after being detained in an Orissa police station for five years.
Ramu the monkey was held at the police station in the Balasore district of India following an attack on a child, which led to the boy being injured. This led to public outcry and the police felt they had to detain the monkey.
However, a media campaign brought the monkey's life to the attention of government officials, who launched an inquiry.
Following this, forest and wildlife officials came to Ramu's rescue, leading him away from his police incarceration by putting him in another, albeit specially designed, cage.
Police have refuted claims that Ramu did not enjoy his time at the police station, offering that he was well looked after during his stay.
"He used to eat fruit in the morning and evening and rice and curry for lunch. We used to spend at least 20 rupees [25p] a day from our own pockets," said Niranjan Kumar Dhir from the police station, according to the Indo Asian News Service.
