Monkey munches on owner
Friday 03 November, 2006
The owner of a monkey in the US is caught between a rock and a hard place following the news that his newly acquired pet decided to bite its owner.
A man from Liberty Township, Ohio, bought a monkey over the internet from a woman in Idaho. However, during one of its first feeding times in its new home, the monkey, described to news station Local 12 as "shy and gentle" by its previous owner, bit its new owner on the hand.
The man had to be treated in hospital for the bight, with an environmental health director from the Department of Health saying the monkey's owner is not in the best condition.
"He's in pretty bad shape. He's bed-ridden at this time," said Jeff Agnew.
Now, the owner must give the monkey up or face a period behind bars to go with his newly acquired scars.
It is illegal where the man lives to own wild animals as pets, so the monkey will have to be given up unless the owner wants to face criminal proceedings. If he does decide to keep the monkey, Mr Agnew said he had two more options.
He can either get rabies injections, or test the monkey for rabies. Unfortunately for the nibbler, the monkey rabies test is fatal.
