Monkey mystery stalks Cyprus
Friday 11 August, 2006
Cyprus is currently embroiled in something of a monkey mystery as police in the country hunt for a primate on the loose.
However, it is not actually known if the monkey really exists. Reports have recorded the monkey tapping on windows to beg for food in the western resort of Paphos as residents and holidaymakers sit down for dinner.
Despite having impeccable timing, the police seem none the wiser as to the primate's whereabouts.
They have had two sightings. One was from a Russian lady who observed a monkey or ape in dense woodland, while another spotter was alarmed when the monkey turned up at her kitchen window.
"There was a team of people out this morning searching...but nothing was found," a Veterinary Services official said, according to Reuters.
Police have said there is no cause for alarm, despite the fact that they don't know whether the primate is an ape or a monkey, or whether it even exists at all.
