Monkey-napper case to go to crown
Friday 27 October, 2006
The case surrounding the theft of SpongeBob the squirrel monkey has developed further, with the man charged being granted unconditional bail to reappear at Kingston Crown Court next month.
SpongeBob was stolen from Surrey's Chessington World of Adventures in July only to reappear four days later in Clapham, London.
A campaign was launched in London's freesheet, Metro, in an attempt to track down the little monkey, who was eventually reunited with the numerous female monkeys SpongeBob had previously shared his enclosure with.
Marlon Brown, 22, from Lambeth, appeared at Kingston Magistrates' Court yesterday, Metro reports, where he pleaded not guilty to the theft of SpongeBob.
Unfortunately for SpongeBob, his return to Chessington was not successful and he had to move to another location.
On his online blog, the monkey spoke of how he'd been bullied by other monkeys on his return to the park, although he mentioned at the time that he was looking forward to seeing "how I get on with all my new lady friends".
