Monkey-napper nabbed
Friday 25 August, 2006
It has been one of the monkey mysteries of the century by all accounts and this week, the SpongeBob monkey theft took another twist.
Police arrested and charged a 22-year-old man from Brixton in south London for his part in the kidnapping of the squirrel monkey, who went missing from Chessington Zoo in Surrey last month.
Despite the fact that SpongeBob was recovered within days of going missing from the zoo the monkey was found playing with children in Clapham, south-west London he suffered some trauma from the experience.
It is believed that the rare monkey was targeted as he is the only breeding monkey of his type in the country.
However, it is thought that the large local media campaign that was prompted following SpongeBob's disappearance from Chessington made the monkey-napper's position unfeasible and he was released.
A member of the public recognised SpongeBob from his picture in the newspaper and returned him to the zoo.
