Monkey on the run
Tuesday 24 April, 2007
Residents of Srinagar, Saifullah, in India have been thrown into disarray with the arrival in town of a wild monkey, something the townsfolk have never dealt with before.
The baboon is the latest wild animal to wind up in the area, following hot on the heels of a leopard, a bear and owls, all of which have led to something of a chase involving the residents of Srinagar.
Seemingly wise to the 'game' the residents like to play with unfamiliar animals, the baboon fled up a nearby tree to safety, according to IBN Live.
"For the children of Srinagar this is a wonder. They are scared and try to shoo away the baboon by pelting stones. It is out of its habitat and hence difficult to control," said forest minister Qazi Afzal, according to the report.
Some 12 people were killed by wild animals last year in the area, IBN Live notes, which could explain the residents' alarm at seeing another unidentified animal emerge.
Recent research from the University of Cambridge revealed that monkeys are able to learn skills from each other, so if the baboon does escape Srinagar, perhaps he'll pass on his evasion techniques.
