Monkeys make the record books
Friday 29 September, 2006
The Arctic Monkeys have featured in the latest incarnation of the Guinness Book of Records.
Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not was the Monkey's debut album and was the fastest selling first album by a band in the UK ever.
The Sheffield band notched up 363,735 sales of the album in its first week and 113,000 sales on the first day that it hit the shelves.
Elsewhere in the music world, there were other new acts joining the Arctic Monkeys in making their Guinness Book of Records bow.
James Blunt is the new holder of the most albums sold in the UK in a year after his Back to Bedlam album racked up 2,368,000 sales in its first 12 months on the shelf.
The highest paid female singer on the planet has also changed for the first time since 2001. Before the Arctic Monkeys were even conceived, Madonna was making music and is now the highest paid woman on the planet for doing so.
Madonna knocked Britney Spears off the top spot.
