Spongebob's 'companions' came to aid during theft
Friday 23 March, 2007
During a hearing yesterday in relation to the theft of Spongebob the Bolivian squirrel monkey, the court was told that an attack by the monkey's companions contributed to the alleged thief's capture.
During deliberation, the jury were told how blood samples - and therefore DNA evidence - were left at the scene of the crime because of the defendant suffering scratches and bites, inflicted upon him by the monkey's 'roommates'.
However, the defendant has denied the single charge of theft and so the trial continues.
"He was extremely nervous, he was very frightened, he seemed quite anxious," said Sonia Freeman, head of mammals at Chessington World of Adventure, where the theft took place in July 2006.
Spongebob was found two days later in a park playing with children.
Squirrel monkey's can also be found in Costa Rica and Brazil.
