Friday 11 May, 2007
A gang of four men have stolen an autistic woman's monkey from a pet shop in San Mateo, California.
The monkey was stolen from a shop that features a number of animals, such as raccoons, squirrels and marmoset monkeys; however, Destiny - the stolen monkey - had been specially trained to provide vital help to Joan Newberger in the event of a seizure.
However, Ms Newberger has confirmed she is does not want the perpetrators to be punished as she is only concerned about Destiny's return.
"We're family. It's like they took my child. A lot of people don't understand that," said Ms Newberger.
"If I'm having a seizure, he'll get me out of it," she added.
The monkey has been reported to be worth $4,900 (£2,475).
Marmoset monkeys bear a number of distinguishing features, including a lack of wisdom teeth and claws instead of fingernails.
