A history of Brother
Thursday 28 June, 2007
Although the company, as it is now known, came into being in 1962, the history of Brother Industries started far earlier in 1908, with the founding of the Yasui Sewing Machine Company in Japan. Originally based in Nagoya, the company still has its headquarters there today. Internationally, the company employees over 22,000 consolidated members of staff.
Worldwide, Brother is a manufacturer of a diverse range of products including sewing machines, typewriters and fax machines; the company is also a manufacturer of printers as a result of its lengthy association with Centronics, a US printer company now known as the ECKO Group.
The company has manufacturers in a number of locations worldwide, including Japan, Korea, Taiwan, America, the UK and Ireland, which might be of interest to users of
HP printer cartridges,
HP A4 photo gloss laser paper and printers such as the
PhotoSmart D7160.
"The mission of the headquarters in Japan is to enhance the corporate value of the Brother Group by overseeing and supporting our business domains, group companies. From time to time, there may be conflicts between the decisions made by group companies and those of the business as a whole," said Brother.
"Such conflicts should basically be resolved between the parties through mutual understanding, but ultimately Headquarters will make any necessary final decisions for the good of the whole Brother Group," the company added.
Brother's range of printers includes both singular and multi-function devices, with models developed for a number of differing users from small to medium-sized enterprises and large corporations, to users within a home environment; in addition to colour and black-and-white laser products, Brother also offers network printers and models which are TCO'99 certified, which includes models such as the HL-2030 and the HL-2070N.
Indeed, according to Brother, it is the leading manufacturer of retail supplier of laser printers and the premiere manufacturer of fax technology worldwide, which may interest users of
Canon laser toner cartridges,
Lexmark laser printers and
HP laser toner cartridges.
However, perhaps in keeping with the company's roots in the manufacture of sewing machines, Brother still produces a range of sewing and embroidery solutions, including overlockers, machines designed for quilting and a sewing machine range that includes products developed with a traditional metal chassis.
In terms of the company's future direction, Brother makes it clear through its mission statement that it hopes to become the "preferred" brand in all of the sectors in which it operates, through a strategy that incorporates a number of core themes, including high quality products, "outstanding support" and "intelligent pricing".
"In addition to the technological advances being made in data storage media such as hard disks and laser-based precision measuring and processing equipment, we are also actively researching and developing new materials for laser printer toners and ink ribbons used for transfer printing," the company added.
