Lexmark takes security to printers
Monday 02 October, 2006
A new security measure has been devised by Lexmark, set to debut in the United States as a response to a request from federal government.
The security measure applies to multi-function printers (MFPs) and means that users will not be able to copy, fax, scan, print or initiate workflow processes without inserting a special access card, which will authenticate the user.
Such cards are currently issued to the US Department of Defence and are used as a verification and identification method.
According to vnunet.com, while the technology is currently being touted for the US federal government, Lexmark has said that it could be used by other agencies to improve security measures.
The current security system is only reported as applying to MFPs, where there is the ability to copy, fax, scan and print, perhaps where versatility and flexibility could prove the biggest risk.
