MEP calls for more recycling banks
Friday 16 February, 2007
More printers and printer cartridges could be recycled if proposals from Conservative MEP Caroline Jackson for the introduction of more recycling banks across the UK are put into effect.
After chairing the European Parliament debate on a new EU Waste Framework Directive, Ms Jackson is convinced that more recycling points in public places would boost Britain's recycling credentials.
She has called for a recycling system in the UK which is "understandable and easy to use", Materials Recycling Week reports.
Her work on the EU landfill directive has also convinced her that wherever possible, recyclable products such as HP printer cartridges should be re-used.
The European Parliament has just voted in new waste targets, including reducing commercial and industrial waste by 70 per cent by 2020.
But achieving those goals will require immense reserves of political will and innovative practical solutions.
Recycling printer cartridges alone presents a significant challenge as printers become ever more ubiquitous features of home and office life.
The 'hierarchy' of waste treatment instituted by new EU legislation for use on products such as Canon printer cartridges or Epson printer cartridges says that waste should ideally be re-used, and, failing that, recycled or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.
