PC repair: Pretty Costly
Friday 10 November, 2006
We have all been in a situation where a tricky computer problem has got the better of us, whether it is trying to change a printer cartridge or solving a problem with your software.
But it would appear that some high street computer repair shops are taking advantage of their expertise in dealing with such problems by overcharging consumers for the simplest of repairs.
A study carried out by Computing Which? revealed that fixing a problem such as a loose cable could vary in price from as little as £10 to a far more extortionate £139. Meanwhile, quotes for a simple software problem varied from £20 up to £260.
To help computer consumers, Computing Which? has issued some guidelines to ensure the problem with the computer is the only one they face.
Whether it's a problem with your PC or your printer, hints include asking friends and family to recommend a repair shop, getting a quote before work is started and to make it clear if the cost of the work could escalate for any reason.
