In news which may be of interest to users of
Epson printer cartridges,
Canon printer cartridges and
Lexmark printer cartridges, the cost of replacing a proprietary printer cartridge is fuelling the market for refills, it has been claimed.
Indeed, according to Jim Forrest, a senior analyst for Lyra Research, the worldwide market for printer ink is worth $32 billion (£15 billion), yet ink-filled printers are now available for less than $50, reports the Courier Post.
Dan McQuiston, a marketing professor at Butler University, believes that cartridge prices may be high because of the number of incompatible variants for different types of printers, which he said was probably done "by design".
In related news, Epson recently won a preliminary legal victory against 24 print cartridge market manufacturers after allegations that these third-party firms violated the company's patents, which may be of interest to users of
HP printer cartridges and
HP laser toner cartridges.
