Xerox announces forest improvement grant
Wednesday 15 November, 2006
Xerox is to award a $1 million (£530,145) grant to the Nature Conservancy to help improve the management of the world's forests and ensure sustainability in papermaking.
The conversation organisation will use the money to strengthen third-party forest certification standards, which paper distributors rely on to make sure their paper comes from responsibly managed forests.
It will also come up with a set of rules for best practice in forest biodiversity management and communicate these to paper suppliers, forest managers and others in the industry.
As the world's largest distributor of cut-sheet paper, Xerox says it takes its responsibility to promote sustainable development very seriously. Using paper wisely and protecting forest resources form part of this commitment.
Anne Mulcahy, chair and chief executive of Xerox, said: "Advancing sustainable forest management practices among paper suppliers is an important part of Xerox's longstanding commitment to valuing and protecting the environment.
"This partnership with the Nature Conservancy takes our commitment to a new level by focusing on the responsible management of forests that provide raw materials to make paper."
