Christmas could be costly if printers are left on
Thursday 14 December, 2006
The nation's office multifunction printers and laser and desktop machines could cost UK business more than £4.5 million over the Christmas period, according to the latest research.
Canon has said that by leaving officer printers on standby over a ten-day period that includes Christmas and New Year, businesses are wasting money, electricity and harming the environment through carbon dioxide emissions.
When PCs and fax machines are added to the numbers, the more than 13 million machines in UK offices that are left on will consume 43,642,000 kWh of electricity and cost businesses £8.66 million – without even being used.
"It's clear that some equipment needs to be left on over the Christmas period for security reasons but these amazing figures show that businesses that don't turn off their PCs and printers are literally throwing money away as well as damaging the environment over the festive period," said David Smith, marketing director, Canon Business Solutions, Canon UK.
"We have only looked at office equipment that is left in standby mode so imagine how much higher these figures could be if devices are left completely on."
In Japan this week the focus is also on reducing the environmental impact of printing, with the Eco-Products 2006 exhibition in Tokyo.
