Lexmark discovers need for printer security
Monday 04 December, 2006
Lexmark has discovered the need for printer security to be improved in order to strengthen general security across computer networks.
The company carried out a survey at the recent Government Ware 2006 conference in Singapore, which revealed that while 87 per cent said that document and printing security are important to their business, just 32 per cent said they had implemented printing security at their organisation.
"This survey reveals a critical gap between the need for printing security and existing measures taken to address it," said Loh Teck Heng, country manager, Lexmark International.
"Being the second most networked device in the organisation, a printer can become open portals into the organisation's network and a prime target for unauthorised access both internally and externally."
According to the survey, 58 per cent of those interviewed said that they had "spotted sensitive printouts at the printer" while 32 per cent said that they come across such documents on a regular basis.
In the US, a recently discovered 'bot' has been exploiting security weaknesses associated with network printers in educational institutions.
