Printer malfunction? Check your IT manager's happy
Tuesday 15 August, 2006
With printers becoming more and more user friendly and changing a print cartridge as easy as changing your socks, printer problems at work may not be as legitimate as they appear.
According to the latest research, IT managers in companies across the UK are becoming so unhappy in their jobs that they are deliberately making life difficult for other members of staff who have to use technology.
A survey by SNWS on behalf of SkillSoft of more than 300 IT workers has revealed that 75 per cent of them wished they had another job, with 11 per cent of these saying they have deliberately obstructed or been unhelpful to a fellow member of staff.
Incredibly, this figure rose to 50 per cent of IT managers who were unhappy in their role, meaning that the example from the top of the department is not so good in many cases!
"People often don't feel appreciated by their managers," said Mike Emmott, employee relations advisor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.
"We have found that line managers don't do as well as they could in this area but recognition is critical for employees."
So next time the paper jam is cleared, the printer cartridges are new and the printer still won't work, it might be best to check on the mood of your firm's IT manager!
