Printing energy use to be reduced
Monday 17 July, 2006
The amount of energy used by printers in businesses in the UK must be cut, the latest government report has stressed.
Included in the government's energy review, the idea is joined by a host of other energy efficiency measures that will be implemented to reduce energy waste and the impact on the environment over the next 20 years.
Whereas energy waste in the home is being targeted by the government advocating a ban on standby switches on televisions, videos and DVD players, businesses are being targeted through the energy wasted by printers, photocopiers and computers, the Times reports.
The measures are expected to help reduce the country's energy emissions by 13 to 17 per cent on top of the 14 per cent reduction already estimated by 2020.
It is believed that in the home, standby functions on printers, computers, televisions and the like consume eight per cent of electricity use.
The energy efficiency measures will also stretch to washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators.
