Security worries for network printer users
Friday 03 November, 2006
Printer uses are becoming increasingly concerned by security issues surrounding network printing, according to reports.
With the level of data rising, business printer users are reportedly becoming more concerned about how secure this data is, especially when it comes to the issue of network printing and the idea of information 'sharing'.
"Security is an issue on multiple levels," said Bruce Dahlgren, senior vice president of worldwide enterprise sales at HP's Imaging and Printing Group, according to vnunet.com.
"Security for the hardware, security for the documents and security for the information."
Earlier this year HP alerted consumers to some security vulnerability problems with its Colour LaserJet 2500 and 4600 printers.
The problem, which was associated with the devices' Toolbox software, potentially allowed hackers to steal information from users who were unaware of the vulnerability.
Speaking at the time, Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos said: "A vulnerability like this opens the door for hackers to spy upon your sensitive information.
"Not protecting yourself against this problem is like leaving your front door open when you pop down the shops, and expecting to find no-one has stolen your belongings."
