Amateur photographers who use ink cartridges to print out their best work may be interested to hear that Apple's iPhone has become the most popular equipment among users of Flickr.

The photo-sharing site's latest usage figures reveal that the camera phone has knocked the Nikon D90 off the top spot for the most commonly used device for capturing images that are uploaded to the service.

Flickr obtained the statistics using software that can automatically detect the brand of gadget that snapped a picture, something the site says it is able to achieve around two-thirds of the time.

As it is harder for the site to detect camera phones, it points out such devices are usually underrepresented.

Rounding out the top five most popular cameras are three models from Canon – the EOS 5D Mark II, the EOS Digital Rebel XSi and the EOS Rebel T1i, while the Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS was the most commonly used point and shoot device.

The iPhone 4 has a five-megapixel camera with a built-in LED flash and 5X digital zoom capabilities.
