Individuals who use Canon ink cartridges to print out their best photos may be interested to hear the firm has teamed up with Hollywood director Ron Howard to make a short film based on user-submitted pictures.

Photographers have been invited to submit their best snaps to the scheme, dubbed Project Imagin8ion, with the best eight being developed into a movie.

Speaking to PopPhoto.com, Howard said: "We have to find some kind of a thread between the categories that suggests a narrative. We don't want to make the simplest choice. I want to choose the images that really speak to me."

The project is a family affair, as while Howard will produce, the film will be directed by his daughter Bryce, who is also an actress and has appeared in films such as Spiderman 3 and The Village.

Howard, who began his career as an actor in US sitcom Happy Days before directing films such as Apollo 13, said when he heard Canon's concept of using photos to inspire a film, he liked the idea "immediately".

The eight categories in which entrants will be invited to submit photos are setting, time, character, mood, relationship, goal, obstacle and the unknown.
