Home users looking to purchase a new printer may find the Pixma iP4950 from ink supplies maker Canon offers a high level of performance.

The device is claimed by the manufacturer to deliver "photo-lab quality" prints, which may make it an ideal Christmas gift for a keen amateur snapper.

It uses five individual ink cartridges that help reduce waste and optimise usage, as well as making it cheaper to replace tanks when they have run out.

One publication impressed with the machine was CNet UK, which awarded the device its Editor's Choice accolade.

Reviewer Niall Magennis said "it's hard to find much wrong with the iP4950", noting the fast print speed and excellent output quality, which offers "rich colour hues and impressive levels of detail" when producing photos.

For users who require the extra capabilities of a multifunction device, Mr Magennis also recently noted the MG5350 from Canon can provide a high level of performance.
