A total of 15 million printer cartridges have been recycled since 2003 through a partnership between a number of manufacturers and Planet Ark, a report states.
As a result of the programme, which has seen manufacturers including Canon, Brother and HP work with the organisation to ensure responsible recycling of their products, more than 6,900 tonnes of plastic have been diverted from landfill, the Southern Courier reports.
Janet Sparrow, recycling programmes manager at Planet Ark, told the news provider: "Key to the success of the programme has been the close and effective partnerships between responsible manufacturers, retail and workplace collection points and the general public."
Proposed legislation in Australia is set to make recycling of products such as ink cartridges and other electronics equipment more widespread, with manufacturers expected to take more responsibility for ensuring their products do not end up in landfill.
Various recycling schemes take place in locations around the world and both home and business users are able to recycle their ink or toner cartridges, helping to reduce the number of products that are sent to landfill.
