Hi, the XL does work in the Canon PIXMA MG5650 printer. The difference is that the XL contains more than twice the amount of ink. They are simply just a different option if you have more to print.

Hi there, I'm unsure if there is a physical difference in size between the XL versus standard ink cartridges but there is a difference in the amount of ink in the cartridges. The XL cartridges have almost double the amount of ink / pages printed.
