In a nutshell, compatible or remanufactured cartridges don't work in HP's new 'e' printer models. HP 'e' models, or printers with 'e' at the end of the model number such as the HP Deskjet 2710e, are designed to only work with HP original ink cartridges. When you purchase the e printers, HP offer something like 3 months free ink and a cheaper initial cost for the printer (compared to the none e model), but they also add to the terms and conditions that if the free ink offer is accepted, it will install HP + software that locks the printer for it's lifetime so you can't use compatibles in them.
